Therapy for Young Adults in New York City

The years from your late teens through your twenties and early thirties pack in a lot: figuring out work, relationships, identity, and how to actually be an adult. Therapy is a place to sort through it without anyone telling you to just have it figured out already.

We understand

What young adults bring

Common reasons include anxiety and the pressure to keep up, low mood or feeling stuck, and big transitions such as finishing school, starting a career, moving out, or a first serious relationship. Many clients are dealing with the gap between how their life looks from the outside and how it actually feels.

This is also the stage when many mental health conditions first appear. The National Institute of Mental Health reports that young adults aged 18 to 25 had the highest prevalence of any mental illness, compared with adults aged 26 to 49 and aged 50 and older, which is part of why support during these years matters so much.

Identity, independence, and the comparison trap

A lot of the work in this stage is about becoming yourself: separating what you want from what you were told to want, building relationships that fit, and handling the constant comparison that social media makes hard to avoid. None of that means something is wrong with you. It means you are in a demanding chapter, and it is one therapy is well suited to.

How we work

We pair you with a therapist who relates to where you are and keeps the work real. The relationship is collaborative, you set the agenda, and our clinicians use evidence-based approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy and acceptance and commitment therapy, matched to what you are working on.

When a specific concern needs focused attention, we link it to support such as anxiety, depression, relationship problems, or life transitions.

How we work

What to expect when you start

The first session is mostly you talking through what is going on, with no need to have it organized first. It is also a fit check, and finding someone you click with matters more than getting it right on the first try.

Sessions are online for clients in New York and, with clinicians licensed there, in New Jersey. Some of the clinicians listed here also see clients in person at our Upper West Side office in New York City, and each profile shows where that clinician sees clients and where they are licensed. We can explain insurance and fees up front.
