People often begin therapy because they find themselves repeating patterns they do not fully understand. They may feel stuck in relationships, overwhelmed by anxiety, burdened by grief, disconnected from themselves, or struggling to move forward despite their best efforts. Others come to therapy with a sense that something in their lives feels incomplete or out of alignment, even when things appear successful from the outside.
I believe our emotional lives are shaped not only by what we consciously know about ourselves, but also by experiences, relationships, and expectations that operate outside of awareness. In therapy, we create space to explore these patterns with curiosity rather than judgment. Together, we pay attention to your thoughts, emotions, relationships, dreams, bodily experiences, and the meanings you make of your life.
My approach integrates psychodynamic psychotherapy with evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and mindfulness-based interventions. I am particularly interested in the relationship between emotional and physical well-being and how unresolved experiences may influence both mind and body.
I work with adults navigating trauma, anxiety, depression, grief, cultural identity concerns, life transitions, relationship difficulties, and questions of meaning and purpose. My hope is to create a therapeutic relationship that feels thoughtful, collaborative, and genuine—a space where deeper understanding can lead to greater freedom, flexibility, and connection with yourself and others.

I am a licensed psychologist in New York. I earned my doctoral degree in Counseling Psychology from Fordham University and completed my doctoral internship at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn. I subsequently completed postdoctoral training at Mount Sinai Morningside’s Adult Outpatient Psychiatry Clinic before joining NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan as a staff psychologist. Throughout my training and career, I have worked in inpatient psychiatry, outpatient psychiatry, psychoanalytic training clinics, cancer care settings, and community mental health programs.
My clinical work has focused on adults experiencing trauma, grief, anxiety, depression, serious mental illness, relationship difficulties, cultural identity concerns, and challenges related to physical health and medical conditions. I have received extensive psychodynamic training through the New York Psychoanalytic Society & Institute and integrate psychodynamic understanding with contemporary evidence-based approaches.
My research has focused on grief, trauma, immigrant mental health, emotion regulation, and culturally responsive psychotherapy. I am particularly interested in the relationship between emotional and physical health and how psychotherapy can foster healing across both mind and body.
“ I’ve been working with Jessica for nearly a year and am very grateful for our sessions, especially with the pandemic. She is a great listener and very down to earth. She remembers a lot of small details about my life and has connected many dots for me.”

“One of the most thoughtful and professional therapists that I've gone to. She listens carefully and patiently to what you have in mind without presuming anything about your problems and who you are; something that has really annoyed me in my previous experiences with therapists in general.”

“Dr. Behr is the absolute best. Brilliant and responsive, her knowledge base and ability to point out things you can't see through the things you say and the way you say them is phenomenal. My time with her has been invaluable, especially during the pandemic.”

“Dr. Jess has helped me so much with my anxiety and worry. She helps me see different perspectives on my problems which really helps. She also is always willing to call me and talk to me in between sessions if I need anything or add me to twice a week when I needed it. I really recommend her if your struggling with anything. She will help you.”

“I have been rebirthed by the work I'm currently doing with Dr. Behr. She is gentle, kind, always reassuring with the right words or suggestions. She has been a phone call away during times of my distress, a "cheerleader" for my personal and professional development, and reassuring when I doubt myself. She is quick to remind me "you are doing the work, I’m just helping you find what you already have within yourself". But, without her guidance my journey would be a lot more daunting. I walked into her office broken, sad and jaded, today I am healing, hopeful and most importantly happy!!”
