There are many reasons to start therapy. For many, it’s a feeling of suffering, misalignment, or unease in a part of (or much of) one’s life. For others, it’s a sense of curiosity, a question about yourself or others. We develop in relationship to the world around us, and working in relationship is what helps us recognize ourselves from our habitual patterns and change. This process takes effort, abiding kindness, honesty, close attention to your speech, as well as curiosity and playfulness. Forming a relationship with you is important to me. Our work closely considers your speech and your desire, your patterns, your wishes, fantasies, thoughts, and feelings at the level of your mind and body. My ideal client is anyone who is motivated to look at themselves honestly (or wants to be), who is open to considering being willing to have a more satisfying life, and who is open to having fun.

I work to create a space that feels natural for you, in which you can experience yourself with awareness. Together, we work to identify what you feel and think in the present moment. We explore what you are experiencing when you experience tension. We identify the views and patterns that get you stuck. We make sense of what keeps these patterns going. My goal is to help you think clearly and feel fully so you can create the internal and external conditions for ease and contentment. And, if all goes well, that is just the beginning.

Training and Education

I am a Clinical Psychologist in New York, California, Washington, D.C., and New Jersey. I earned a Doctoral Degree in Clinical Psychology at Yeshiva University’s Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology. I am Psychodynamically oriented with a patient-centered and eclectic therapeutic approach, I mold each treatment to the needs of the individual, integrating ACT, CBT, DBT, and mindfulness techniques into traditional psychodynamic treatment when useful.

I am currently in psychoanalytic training in Lacanian Psychoanalysis at NUCEP, in Madrid, Spain, and a participant in the Après-Coup Psychoanalytic Association’s Program. I currently work with adults. I trained in hospitals, college counseling centers, community organizations, and community mental health clinics in New York City and Philadelphia, including Mount Sinai Beth Israel, the Metropolitan Center for Mental Health, The City University of New York – Baruch College, the Behavioral Wellness Center at Girard, and the Attic Youth Center. I completed my postdoctoral training at Pratt Institute and the Williamsburg Therapy Group.

Since my training, I have worked with individuals from diverse groups in residential substance use treatment, inpatient and outpatient psychiatry, as well as in community-based and hospital-based outpatient clinics and college counseling. My doctoral research focused on the relevance of PrEP for gay men. I have offered seminars the impact of COVID on LGBTQ+ and POC communities. I am a cofounder of the Get It Together Coalition, a non-profit organization in West Hollywood focused on collaborating with local organizations to find new solutions to heal and support all LGBTQ+ communities. What our clients say about us

“ I’ve been working with Jessica for nearly a year and am very grateful for our sessions, especially with the pandemic. She is a great listener and very down to earth. She remembers a lot of small details about my life and has connected many dots for me.”

- Verified Patient

“One of the most thoughtful and professional therapists that I've gone to. She listens carefully and patiently to what you have in mind without presuming anything about your problems and who you are; something that has really annoyed me in my previous experiences with therapists in general.”

- Verified Patient

“Dr. Behr is the absolute best. Brilliant and responsive, her knowledge base and ability to point out things you can't see through the things you say and the way you say them is phenomenal. My time with her has been invaluable, especially during the pandemic.”

- Verified Patient

“Dr. Jess has helped me so much with my anxiety and worry. She helps me see different perspectives on my problems which really helps. She also is always willing to call me and talk to me in between sessions if I need anything or add me to twice a week when I needed it. I really recommend her if your struggling with anything. She will help you.”

- Verified Patient

“I have been rebirthed by the work I'm currently doing with Dr. Behr. She is gentle, kind, always reassuring with the right words or suggestions. She has been a phone call away during times of my distress, a "cheerleader" for my personal and professional development, and reassuring when I doubt myself. She is quick to remind me "you are doing the work, I’m just helping you find what you already have within yourself". But, without her guidance my journey would be a lot more daunting. I walked into her office broken, sad and jaded, today I am healing, hopeful and most importantly happy!!”
